Where Are You From? A TCK Podcast: E35: Dr. Ruth Van Reken takes over my Podcast!

Dr. Ruth Van Reken, co-author of Third Culture Kid: Growing Up Among Worlds, is arguably the biggest pioneer in working out the unique place we TCK’s belong to in this world. Mike Sullivan is still pinching himself to make sure this is really happening.

They start off discussing dealing with timezones and the transition to virtual meetups. They move on to talk about travel and aging with the paradoxes of living a full life when getting older. Finally, she talks about how David Pollock’s model is still intact but is more like a petri dish having added layers of complexity and uses Mike’s kids as an example.

cultureXchange Podcast: S1/E18: #Third Culture Kids – The Impact of Growing Up Among Worlds with Ruth Van Reken

With the increase in international business, military placements, and immigration, there has been a growing number of Third Culture Kids (TCKs) around the globe. In this episode, Frauke and Marie-Christine explore the complexities of the world of Third Culture Kids (TCKs) based on the fact that these individuals grow up being influenced by three cultures: the heritage culture(s), the host-country culture(s), and the culture of expatriates and other TCKs. Although elements from each culture are assimilated into the TCK’s life and identity, these individuals often have a greater sense of belonging with other TCKs and the international community rather than with the host or heritage culture.

DAPP Event: The Impact of Linguistic & Cultural Displacement on Bilingual Children

Parents want the best for their kids. The question is, what does ‘the best’ mean for children who grow up moving around, especially for those whose home or heritage language is different from the language used at school? Join us to talk about the linguistic and cultural displacement that can occur through global mobility and international schooling on children. Topics: What are the long-term impacts on a child’s sense of identity and self-worth? What sorts of conflict might arise in the parent-child relationship? How does the loss of home or heritage language(s) lead to disconnection in the family? How can parents best support their bilingual/bicultural child through this process? In this conversational webinar, the guests will share insights based on their research on ‘Third Culture Kids’ and personal experiences of growing up with international mobility and in multilingual families. (Webinar with Q&A – 60 minutes)

Hosted by: Malahat Baig-Amin & Elizabeth Legrain
Guest Speaker: Isabelle Min, Ruth Van Reken, and Danau Tanu
