Jen Mohindra tagged you in a post: “I am so very excited to let you know about today’s podcast guest. She is so special that I have extended the podcast from its usual 30 minutes to a whole hour. To we TCKs, today’s podcast guest needs no introduction. Ruth Van Reken is a giant amongst us. Author of Letters Never Sent and co-author of the Third Culture Kids with David Pollock known all over the world as the ‘TCK bible’. I have had the absolute privilege of spending an hour chatting to Ruth about her life, her work and growing up as a TCK. https://anchor.fm/jenny-mohindra/episodes/People-Like-Us—TCK-Podcast—Episode-25-Ruth-van-Reken-eo2qtn“.

My guest for today is Dr Ruth Van Reken .If you have been involved in the TCK community for a certain duration of time, this amazing lady would need zero introduction as she is both a founder member of FIGT(Families in Global Transition) the foremost organization that advocated global citizens and co-authored the book we considered our bible ‘ Third Culture Kids: Growing Up Among Worlds’ which explain the many new nuances of the TCK experience and the progress of the larger community as well and hopefully to share new tips for transitions, reentry, sorting through identity issues and questions for personal reflection or group discussion are also included with the hope that others who read and are from or working with those of other cross cultural backgrounds will help join in the larger conversation we need to have in these days.

For over three decades, Dr Ruth worked with families, educators, and others in trying to help them understand issues third culture kids (TCKs), aka as globally mobile children, face and her interest is now expanded to see how lessons learned from this cohort of those who are or have grown up cross-culturally with high mobility and rootlessness can apply to the larger group of cross-cultural kids (CCKs) Seeing how the cultural complexity for so many children and the adults they become and their families as well impacts them is fast becoming the new normal in many places urges her to network with others working in any of these arenas of immigrant, refugee, bicultural/binational children, and etc to understand regardless of our differences, how similar are we, and how to use the gifts of this experience and also how to deal effectively with the challenges that also come, and begin to recognize the same for other types of CCKs of all backgrounds.
